09.03.11 · End of Year Results

  • First evaporative cooling system installed and operating ahead of expectations
  • Omani desalination plant performance recognised at government and industry level
  • Group financial position remains strong with £19.3 million cash and no debt Post year-end, Cogent Environmental acquisition bolsters water monitoring offering
  • Post year-end, further sales of Cymtox units in important Chinese market

Commenting on the results, Modern Water Executive Chairman Neil McDougall said:

“We are proud to have recorded many important achievements across the Group during 2010. In the first half of the year we began operating our first Manipulated Osmosis (MO) evaporative cooling system in Oman. Testing has exceeded expectations and the potential for our technology to reduce power consumption and expenditure costs within a commercial setting has now been proven.

“Our existing desalination plant in Oman received important recognition during the year following a visit by the country’s Public Authority for Electricity and Power. The authority verified that operating expenditure is significantly reduced compared with a standard reverse osmosis plant. Modern Water also impressed leading trade journal, Water Desalination Report, which visited both Omani plants and gave the MO technology its highest ranking.

“During the year there have also been important commercial trials of our AguaCure technology and a further strengthening of the Group’s patent portfolio.

“After the year-end, we announced the acquisition of Cogent Environmental, a global environmental and process monitoring business. This addition to Modern Water has paved the way for the establishment of MW Monitoring, a new division focused on the water monitoring market. The division will also incorporate Cymtox, our existing toxicity monitoring business, which has recently delivered further sales of the Cymtox CTMTM units in China.

“The Group remains in a strong financial position with £19.3 million cash at 31 December 2010, and no debt. The key drivers for the business remain firmly in place and we are committed to bringing new water technologies to the global marketplace. We continue to focus on growing Modern Water’s commercial foot-print, through our own operations and attractive investments within the global water sector.”

Cogent to launch new online trace metals analyser at WWEM

Instrumentation specialist Cogent Environmental has chosen the WWEM 2010 event to launch a new advanced trace metals analyser that has been designed to provide highly accurate continuous monitoring in a low cost package that is ideal for both industrial and remote locations.

The new OVA7000 reduces monitoring costs and offers high levels of flexibility because it can be configured to meet customer requirements for both accuracy and speed.

Providing continuous unattended monitoring for a wide range of analytes (total As, Au, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn, Ni, Tl, U, Zn), the OVA7000 is suitable for applications including surface water, industrial wastewater and process water.

The analyser is ideal for remote sites because it can operate from DC power and offers both wired and wireless communications. A key feature of the instrument is the automatic pre-treatment that has been incorporated into the design to ensure accuracy and reliability.

New online Arsenic Monitor
The Cogent stand at WWEM (No 64) will also feature the 'OVA7000As' which has been specifically designed for the measurement of Arsenic in drinking water and incorporates a novel Copper reduction system which ensures the highest levels of performance.

2009 · New lab application for cost-efficient metals analysis

COGENT Environmental has developed a new test cell, the 'SV Labcell', for use with company's market leading portable metals analyser, the PDV 6000plus.

The SV Labcell provides lower levels of detection and greater flexibility in analytical methodology, effectively turning the PDV 6000plus into a precise analytical laboratory instrument.

The PDV 6000plus is a portable metals analyser that provides fast, cost-effective analysis of solid or liquid samples for a range of metals including Arsenic, Cadmium, Lead, Copper, Zinc, Mercury, Chromium and Nickel. The SV Labcell adds molybdenum, uranium and other metals to this list and permits the use of bismuth film techniques  removing the need for mercury film electrodes.

Many hundreds of these instruments are in use world-wide because operators have a need to be able to produce fast results without having to incur the cost and time delays of laboratory analysis. However, laboratory analysis is often required when lower levels of detection are required, for regulatory purposes, in research or in circumstances which demand a broader range of measurands.

Traditional laboratory equipment for the analysis of metals, such as ICP or GFAA, can be expensive to purchase and operate, requiring a high level of expertise. In contrast, the PDV 6000plus with an SV Labcell is relatively low cost, simple to operate and capable of producing high quality data.

Explaining the appeal of the new system, Cogent's Martin Butterfield says, "The development of the SV Labcell will enable our customers to produce data with much greater precision and resolution  easily meeting the requirements of the majority of practical applications and turning the PDV6000plus into a powerful research tool - all at a much lower cost."

Linux and VAS. We have established that VAS software is WINE-compliant in Linux Ubuntu 9.04. This means that VAS can be run in Linux, via WINE. Unfortunately, there is as yet no Linux driver for the PDV 6000plus, so this restricts the use of VAS to calculation and demonstration of VAS files only. Please let us know if a Linux driver is something that would be useful to you!

01.09.09

Cogent Environmental Ltd had their first-ever ISO9001 audit over 2 days in July 2009, at their Cambridge centre, which comprises both offices and laboratory space. The review dealt mainly with the Quality Management System for the manufacture of reagents, as well as the installation of the OVA500, its maintenance and repair. About 13 relatively minor inconsistencies were highlighted for review by the auditor. These have now been successfully dealt with, and an ISO 9001 certificate was issued on the 24th of August. Cogent Environmental is now officially ISO 9001-compliant in its manufacturing processes.

01.09.09

A detachable magnetic stirrer option for the PDV6000plus is now available to order. The original stirrer has a metal link to the stirrer motor which can be attacked by acid or alkaline solutions, making checking and maintenance a continual priority. The new stirrer is sealed inside plastic, solving the problem of solution contamination and attack at the same time.

07.08.09

Cogent are adding the LabCell as an option for the PDV6000plus instrument. It will help to extend the instrument's use in laboratories.
